Low Back Pain, Leg Pain And Sciatica

How is leg pain and sciatica connected to low back pain?

Low back pain is debilitating. It’s so debilitating that people with low back pain can not function. They can’t work, they can’t do their sports or exercises and they can’t spend quality time with their family.

With low back at times comes leg pain and sciatica.  Although sciatica is a form a leg pain, not all leg pain is diagnosed as sciatica.  The spinal nerves of the low back (lumbar and sacral region) contribute to the nerves that travel into the thigh, leg and into the feet. So, when these low back spinal nerves are affected or injured or inflamed or “pinched”, they can refer pain into the thigh, leg or feet.

More specifically though, the sciatic nerve emerges from the gluteal region. When the sciatic nerve is specifically irritated, pinched, inflamed or affected, it can radiate extreme shooting pain down the leg and into the foot. When the sciatic nerve is involved with leg pain, the leg pain is appropriately called sciatica.

Often times, the structures (muscles, joints and ligaments) in the low back and sacrum region can refer pain into the leg. This type of leg pain is not called sciatica.

Chiropractic care has helped many people with low back pain, leg pain and sciatica. Often times, the causes of low back pain, leg pain or sciatica is a misalignment of the spine in the low back or a misalignment of the sacrum in the pelvic region. A spinal misalignment in the low back region will stress nerves, discs, joints, muscles and ligaments which can cause low back pain, leg pain or low back pain.

If you have low back pain or leg pain of any kind, a check-up with the chiropractor will be highly informative. It can tell you what’s causing your back pain and leg pain, how the low back pain and leg pain can be relieved and more importantly, how to correct the underlying spinal problem with chiropractic care so it doesn’t not come back again.

Keeping the low back strong and healthy is a requirement for a fully functional life, whether it be at home, at work or during play and recreational time.

Check with a chiropractor in your area so see if chiropractic care for your low back pain can work for you.
