Let me tell you about Mr. Mike, who is 68 years old and has trouble walking.

Mr. Mike comes into our office and tells me he has back pain, tingling in his right leg, and has trouble walking.

Here’s the kicker. He says, “My family doctor told me a year ago I have arthritis.”

I hear this so many times. Patients tell me often, “I already know I have arthritis.”

What Mr. Mike has is osteoarthritis, also called degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, which is a wear-and-tear type of arthritis.

Here’s my issue when people tell me they already know they have arthritis.

Arthritis is Not the Problem!

I’m not saying that arthritis does not cause pain, discomfort, lack of mobility, and suffering, because it does.

What I’m saying is this…Arthritis is an indication of an underlying problem that has already existed for at for at least the past 20 years.

If the degenerative arthritis is in the spine, then the underlying cause most of the time is an alignment problem with the spine. An abnormal shift of alignment (a spinal misalignment, aka subluxation), over time (years and decades) will cause a wear-and-tear on the spinal joints and the discs. It’s essentially inevitable that a misaligned spine will lead to arthritis.

You see, the spinal misalignment comes first, then the arthritis. The signs of wear and tear on the spine due to spinal misalignments show up years and sometimes decades later.

This is why arthritis is not the problem. Arthritis is a sign that the underlying problem, spinal misalignment or subluxation, has existed for years.

So with Mr. Mike, my focus as a chiropractor is not to treat the arthritis. My focus with chiropractic is to correct the underlying problem, the spinal misalignment. Why? Because an optimally aligned spine is a healthy spine. The better alignment the spine is in, the less likely it will degenerate over time.

And if there already is arthritis on the spine, the goal for chiropractic is to correct the spinal misalignments as best as possible so to prevent the further progression of the degenerative process (that is, to prevent the arthritis to progress and get worse).

The only way to know if chiropractic can help is with a spinal check up. The only way to correct spinal misalignments is with specific, scientific, chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractic checks up early on in life, well before the arthritis begins to start showing up on the spine, is essential for prevention.

And if a person already knows they have arthritis, they should not wait for a spinal check up with the chiropractor.  As long as it has not progressed to end-stage arthritis (stage 4), where the spinal bones have fused, then there is still hope. A chiropractic check up will tell what the prognosis would be.

If someone is slowing down with their mobility or is have restricted mobility due to arthritis on the spine, the should also get a chiropractic check up.

The intention is to keep the legs powered-up and strong by promoting proper nerve flow to the muscles and joints of the legs. Chiropractic adjustments help to improve nerve flow by removing the interference on the nervous system.

Who do you know that has complained of arthritis, has mentioned arthritis, is a having trouble walking, or has limited mobility?

Tell them about chiropractic and refer them for a chiropractic check up.
