Introduction to ScoliBrace

Introduction to ScoliBrace

Developed in 2011 by Dr. Jeb McAviney (Chiropractor), ScoliBrace was invented to create a better conservative way to successfully treat patients with scoliosis. It is now available worldwide. ScoliBrace is a truly custom 3D scoliosis brace used to treat scoliosis in children, adolescents and adults. Using a specific design algorithm, coupled with a patient-centered approach to bracing treatment, ScoliBrace has become the pre-eminent bracing system
worldwide helping thousands of patients living with scoliosis.

The ScoliBrace Approach

Rather than using a traditional mindset of trying to immobilize the spine through a brace, the ScoliBrace approach genuinely attempts to individualize the correction and achieve an improved alignment of the spine and body posture in the brace.

The brace’s over-corrective approach harnesses spinal coupling, not 3 point pressure, to create a better position of the three-dimensional posture of the body. In this position, the brace then works to retrain the neurological connection between the brain, joints and muscles to control the body posture so that the body adapts to a ‘new normal’, ideally a straighter position of the spine.

As ScoliBrace is designed to allow for this retraining, it can be used in cases outside of the traditional recommendation of adolescents during the rapid growth spurt, including infant, juvenile, adolescent and adult cases.

ScoliBrace’s Advanced Design

Made to strict protocols , every ScoliBrace is of a consistent high quality design that gets
results:

  • 3D Custom Design and Made: Custom designed and made for each patient with the
latest in 3D scanning technology and computer aided design and manufacture (CAD
CAM). The algorithmic approach ensures consistency within the design and manufacture
process whilst also allowing for individual patient customization to achieve the best
    possible outcomes.
  • Corrective: In most cases ScoliBrace uses an over-corrective approach to guide the body into a posture that is the opposite of the way the scoliosis has positioned it. By putting the body posture in this over-corrected position, it forces the spine to straighten up
using the concept of spinal coupling i.e. as the body moves into the opposite position, the spine moves with it towards that position achieving the maximum straightening within the limits of the spine’s flexibility.
  • Patient Friendly: Made from a lightweight, durable material and padded for patient comfort, the ScoliBrace opens and closes at the front making it easy to wear and remove without assistance. There are a variety of unique colors and patterns available for patients to personalize the look of their brace.
  • Evidence Based: Research (1) supports the use of specialized bracing, like ScoliBrace, as an effective non-surgical treatment for scoliosis. ScoliBrace is also shown to be effective for treatment outcomes when combined with scoliosis specific exercise programs, such as ScoliBalance.
Types of ScoliBrace

Designed with the patient in mind, ScoliBrace has a versatile range to suit all ages and most curve types, with a focus on brace fit and achieving treatment goals. For all cases, specific indications will vary according to the patient’s age, curve type, flexibility and degree.

ScoliBrace
  • A 3D custom made over-corrective brace for children and adolescents with scoliosis.
  • For Infantile, juvenile and adolescent cases of idiopathic scoliosis, some cases ofneuromuscular curves and curves up to 60° cobb angle*
Adult ScoliBrace
  • A 3D custom made, adult specific brace focussing on postural realignment and spinal
    stabilization
  • For younger and older adults with a pre-existing scoliosis from adolescence, degenerative scoliosis (De novo scoliosis), for treatment of cosmetic issues related to scoliosis and pain and/or reduction in function, e.g. inability to perform activities of daily living
KyphoBrace
  • A 3D custom made, specific brace for treating hyperkyphosis, Scheuermann’s kyphosis
    and poor posture.
For patients with Scheuermann’s kyphosis, hyperkyphosis, thoracolumbar kyphosis &
anterior sagittal balance, curves up to 85°
ScoliNight
  • A 3D custom made, hyper-corrective brace designed specifically for night time wear
  • An early intervention for smaller curves in younger patients. These are single thoracic,
lumbar or thoracolumbar curves less than 25 degrees, flexible curves and some postural
    scoliosis.
How Can ScoliBrace Help?

ScoliBrace can be used as part of a complete approach to care for patients with scoliosis. It
may assist to:

  • Slow or stop progression
  • Reduce curves
  • Improve body appearance and cosmetics through postural correction and better body
    symmetry
  • Reduce pain and minimize discomfort
  • Promote better upright balance in older adults
  • Reduce the need for surgery

For smaller, simple curves and some postural scoliosis:

ScoliNight may help to stop the curve from progressing during growth, improve posture, body appearance and cosmetics and reduce the need for full-time bracing.

For idiopathic curves in children and adolescents:

ScoliBrace may help to stop progression, reduce the curve, improve the overall appearance of the body and improve function and pain.

For younger and older adults:

The Adult ScoliBrace may help with postural realignment (improvement in sagittal and coronal balance) and spinal stabilization, reduce pain and improve body appearance, promote better upright balance and slowing or stopping progression and worsening of scoliosis curves

(KyphoBrace) For patients with hyperkyphosis and Scheuermann’s kyphosis:

KyphoBrace aims to restore a patient’s thoracic kyphosis angle to within a range that is considered normal for their age. Curve reduction may be achieved, while improving the patient’s posture, body appearance and sagittal balance as well as reducing pain and minimizing discomfort in the middle and lower back.

Supportive information:

*There is evidence to suggest adolescent idiopathic curves up to 60 degrees can be effectively treated with bracing^. In some cases there may be a medical necessity to brace curves greater than 60°. A consultation with a scoliosis clinician to discuss this option is
recommended.
