Maple, ON— I’ve lived in Maple, Ontario, a hamlet in the City of Vaughan, for 27 years and I love this town! I have seen Maple and Vaughan grow year after year since my high school days. It’s a town filled with awesome, friendly people and families.

I have been practicing as a chiropractor in Maple, Ontario since 2004. Over the years as a chiropractor, I have had the privilege of meeting and helping lots of people form our community and from the surrounding communities (Woodbridge, Concord, King City, Kleinburg and Thornhill).

Many people are seekers of the healthy lifestyle. Like many other communities in Ontario, Maple and the surrounding areas offer lots of great opportunities to get active, fit and healthy.

In this article, I want to give you 5 healthy, fun things you can do in Maple, Ontario (and the surrounding Areas).

1. Go for a nature walk.
One of the most outstanding activities you can do is to go for a walk in a nature. This past weekend was the Victoria Day long weekend and I was out on the Oak Ridge Moraine Trail (about 9 km north of Maple). It was sunny, warm and the air was fresh out there. The sights were calming and the colors of nature were soothing. There are many parks in Maple but get out on a nature trail because it gets you out of your usual city and suburban grind. The Oak Ridges Moraine Trail has many entry points but the one closest to the village of Maple is on Keele St, about one kilometer north of King Rd. You will see a trail entry point on the west side and the east side of Keele St. where the Oak Ridges Moraine sign is located. You will miss it if you are not consciously looking for it. It’s just north of the Mary Lake Monastery. Being immersed in nature has a tremendous healing effect and can also reduce your stress. Everyone should spend more time in nature. Be sure to bring your children too. Make it a family fun day. If you are observant and lucky, you will see some cool wildlife too. Bring your camera and take some fun pics. Getting out in nature gives you exposure to more sunlight which is essential for vitamin D production. Take a break from your busy life and busy weekend and spend one to two hours in nature next weekend. You will enjoy it and its great for your health and well being.

2. Go for a swim or do aquatic exercises.
There is something relaxing about being in water. Do you agree? Swimming is a super cardio exercise and its effective for keeping your muscles in shape and toned. Maple Community Centre, located on 10190 Keele Street has a pool and it also offers fitness classes. If you are a good swimmer, get out and do some laps. If you are not good at swimming, join an aquatic class. You can stay in the more shallow area, take advantage of still being in the pool, having fun and getting fit. Close to Maple, in Thornhill Ontario, is the Thornhill Outdoor Pool, which operated by the City of Vaughan Recreation Department. It offers recreational swims, lane swims and also aquatic fitness. The big advantage is that the Thornhill Pool is outdoors, where you get open air and sunlight. Take advantage of this outdoor pool in our great City of Vaughan, which is just a 15 minute drive from Maple.

3. Play beach volleyball.
Although there is no beach in Maple, Ontario, it does have beach volleyball. I used to play beach volley ball in my chiropractic college days. It was fun, social and provide a great workout each week. The Sports Village, which is located on 2600 Rutherford Rd, in Concord, offers 5 state-of-the-art, regulation size beach volleyball courts. They have co-ed recreational play and competitive leagues. Beach volleyball offers another way to get you moving and out of the daily routine of work and household chores.  It’s a total body exercise, utilizing arms, legs and plyometric jumping. And yes, it’s fun too.

4. Enjoy a concert in the park.
The City of Vaughan hosts a wonderful lineup of free Concerts in the Park during the summer months. Live shows, like concerts, are a great break from your daily routine and it get’s you out having fun. These type of community events are also good family activities too. Everyone needs a break from their work schedules and some time to wind down. Listening to music is an effective strategy for destressing. The venue for these concerts are in different park locations across Vaughan. Two locations used in Maple are the Vaughan City Hall Outdoor Courtyard, located at 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr, and Mackenzie Glen District Park, located at 220 Cranston Park Ave. If you are a music lover, get out to one of these free concerts and enjoy. Of course, you can bring healthy snacks with you, like fruits, nuts and vegetables.

5. Visit a farmers market.
Everyone could be eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. Not every has the time to grow their own fruit and vegetable garden in their backyard. So the next best thing is to visit a farmers market. Maple has rich farming history. I remember when we first moved here, and well into the 90’s, there were several farms in Maple that offered locally grown vegetables. Today, Maple, has grown into a thriving suburban community, with the rest of the City of Vaughan. But Vaughan still hosts a wonderful farmers market in Woodbridge, which is called is the Woodbridge Village Farmers Market, located on the northwest corner of Hwy #7 and Islington Ave., at the Woodbridge Pool & Memorial Arena parking lot. It’s only about 15 minutes from Maple. It runs from early summer to early fall. When you are looking for fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, check out this farmers market. Bring your children too. Get them involved in choosing their fruits and vegetables. This helps motivate them to eat more fruits and veggies.

There you have it. Maple, Ontario, a wonderful growing hamlet in the City of Vaughan, offers many opportunities for a fun and healthy summer. Take advantage of some of these great resources and facilities that are in our “backyards”.
